Valerie Diane Valeriano-Karlsson

Dr. Valerie Diane Valeriano-Karlsson is a microbiologist and microbiome researcher affiliated with Karolinska Institutet in Sweden, with expertise in host–microbe interactions, microbial genomics, culturomics, and translational microbiome research.

Her experience includes leading the Culturomics Unit at Karolinska Institutet, where her work has focused on microbial cultivation and the development of microbiome-based approaches for human health and therapeutic applications. Her broader research background spans both human and animal microbiome research, including gastrointestinal microbiology, women’s health, cancer-associated microbiome research, and microbial biotechnology.

She has worked across academic and industry collaborations to bridge fundamental microbiome science with applications in health and biotechnology. Drawing on this interdisciplinary experience, she brings a One Health perspective to understanding host–microbe interactions and their relevance to precision medicine.
